Of all the exhibits at our Museum, none appeals to a wider range of visitors than Mount Vernon’s own hometown star, Paul Lynde. Children know him as the voice of “Templeton, The Rat,” in the animated Charlotte’s Web movie, and as Elizabeth Montgomery’s “Uncle Arthur” on Nickelodeon’s reruns of Bewitched.
Older visitors recall Bye, Bye, Birdie, Send Me No Flowers, and many other movie comedies, as well as the long-running original daytime and evening editions of Hollywood Squares, and Paul’s countless guest appearances with Ed Sullivan, Perry Como and other television shows of the 1960’s.
From his birth here in Mount Vernon in 1926 through high school graduation in the Class of ‘44, Paul called Mount Vernon his home. He was very active in high school theatrical productions before going on to Northwestern University, where he received his more formal dramatic training.
Paul launched his professional career in New York City in the late 1940’s, and before long was appearing in Broadway productions and as a night club performer. His widespread recognition and many awards attest to his popularity as an actor and comedian, which continued until his death in 1982.
Paul’s fans and friends, and especially his high school classmates from 1944, visit our Museum often to share stories and personal experiences from the past.
The generous donation of Paul Lynde memorabilia to our Museum by Paul’s family and friends has created an outstanding collection of photographs, movies, recordings, magazines, clippings, props, and related artifacts (including his beautiful yellow 1964 Ford Thunderbird) for fans of all ages to enjoy.
Just before Halloween, in October, 2014, our Museum had a visit from Tom Bosco, of Columbus' ABC-6, to see our Paul Lynde collection and chat about Uncle Arthur, on "Bewitched."
